Council plans to alter bus gate

watch

Dublin City Council is preparing a temporary lifting of the controversial bus gate at College Green following complaints from city businesses.

The Council is proposing that the area be opened during the evening rush hours to private cars from the middle of November until the middle of January.

It is believed the restriction will still apply during morning rush hours.

The council is also planning to make on-street parking free for the Christmas shopping period.

The proposal will be put to councillors next Monday.

Meanwhile, a group of city retailers prepare to file affidavits as part of a High Court action against the bus gate.

The retailers claim that evening business has suffered since the restriction was introduced last July.

City retailers claim that trade on Thursday evenings is down over 30% since the traffic constraint.
