More than 1m people have taken part in a demonstration in Madrid to protest against the socialist government's plans to liberalise the abortion law.

They are demanding that the government withdraw the draft law, which is currently in the parliament and would introduce abortion on demand within the first 14 weeks of a pregnancy.

At present, a pregnancy can only be terminated in Spain under specific circumstances.

It is the latest in a series of ethical issues which have pitted the Socialist cabinet against Spain's Catholic right.
