It was the final meeting organised by 24/7 Frontline Services Alliance, which represents gardaí, nurses and firemen.

The national executive of the unions involved in the alliance will meet next week to discuss the next phase of their campaign.

General Secretary of the Irish Nurses Organisation Liam Doran said they will meet the leaders of the political parties in the interim to seek their views on the McCarthy report and also to ask them straight up if public servants are overpaid.

Most unions that can ballot are already balloting for a mandate for industrial action in the event of pay cuts.

Gardaí are forbidden by law to take part in industrial action.

However, vice president of the Garda Representative Association Damien McCarthy said their national executive would consider whether its members should provide cover in the event of other unions striking.

He also strongly criticised the Government, which he said had refused to meet with his association.

Seamus Murphy from the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) told the meeting that public servants would never accept modest rates for working nights, weekends or bank holidays and hard-won allowances that were part of their core pay.
