More than 1,000 people queued for part-time temporary Christmas jobs at Marks & Spencer this afternoon

The retailer has 588 temporary part-time positions to fill at its 20 stores around Ireland. So far, 400 of the jobs have been allocated.

The company held centralised walk-in interviews in Dublin where prospective candidates have been assessed.

It has seen 700 candidates and expects to meet another 200 people by 10pm this evening.

200 people are scheduled for interviews tomorrow.

The positions on offer are in a variety of areas and the company says they are open to anyone over school-leaving age.

Successful candidates will be offered a two-day induction course and must be prepared to work a minimum of 16-hours a week every week between now and Christmas, including evenings and weekends.

Candidates also have to bring two references with them.

The company says it had expected significant interest in the jobs but is surprised at the numbers that have turned up today.

It also says that many of the candidates are of a very high calibre.

The retailer has said it will interview anyone who attends, as long as they have the required documentation and meet the minimum requirements.
