Authorities say consumers should not be concerned about eating pork or pork products following the confirmation of swine flu in a herd of Irish pigs.
The location of the infected herd has not been disclosed.
The Department of Agriculture says it is no surprise that pigs have been infected with the influenza A(H1N1) virus because of the widespread occurrence of the pandemic virus in humans.
There are now over 3,000 cases of human infection a week.
It is believed the pigs contracted the virus from an infected person.
The department said the disease in pigs is mild and there is no need for animals to be destroyed as the virus passes after a few days.
There have been no reported human cases of swine flu linked to the consumption of properly cooked pork anywhere, according to the Food Safety Authority.
