Gardai, nurses, soldiers and prison officers from the west and north west have packed the meeting in opposition to further cuts proposed by the MacCarthy report

Louise O'Reilly of SIPTU told the meeting that 'it is past time they stood up for themselves' said she wanted 'Brian Lenihan's ears to be ringing with the sound of angry frontline workers letting him know that they are not a soft touch or an easy option to skim off a few bob'.

Michael O'Boyce of the Garda Representative Association said the meeting sends a strong message to the politicians who want to cut their cut pay again.

The next regional meeting will be in Cork on Wednesday night.
