40 people are being made redundant after Esker Bus & Coach Ltd and its sister company, KVC Manufacturing Ltd, in Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath went into liquidation.

Kieran Wallace of KPMG was appointed provisional liquidator.

The company made all staff redundant two hours before the liquidator was appointed. The liquidator has rehired seven members of staff to work along side him for the next three to four weeks.

Elsewhere, 18 workers have lost their jobs after the appointment of a liquidator at John Gannon & Son's Concrete products Ltd in the same town and nine redundancies are to be sought by the Loughneane Concrete firm in Birr, Co Offaly.

Management at the concrete products manufacturing company say they are saddened at the collapse of the company which has been in operation in Kilbeggan for the past 30 years.

Elsewhere, 40 new jobs have been announced at the Galway city office of RSA Insurance Ireland Ltd.

The company launched its expansion plans at an event in the city this lunchtime attended by the Mayor of Galway, Declan McDonnell and Chief Executive RSA Ireland Philip Smith.

The Galway expansion includes 40 new positions and a €3m investment in enhanced technology systems and upgraded facilities at its premises in Ballybrit.

Mr McDonnell said the jobs announcement is a real boost to the local economy.

Marketing Director of RSA Insurance Ireland Pat Nally says the jobs will be filled by the end of the year.
