Tallaght Hospital in Dublin has said it is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff as it deals with an increased number of suspected swine flu cases.

The hospital says that to date it has been in a position to isolate all suspected cases in single rooms.

All individual rooms are now occupied at the hospital.

The hospital said that it is following all national protocols and best practice.

Last Friday, an 18-year old patient at the hospital became the first person in Ireland to die from the H1N1 virus.

The Department of Health has said that 50 people have been hospitalised so far with swine flu and 21 patients remain in hospital undergoing treatment for the virus.

Dr Eibhlin Connolly, deputy chief medical officer at the Department, said that of the five patients who have required intensive care, four remain in such units.

Figures released this evening during the department's weekly briefing show that in the week up to last Sunday, the number of cases diagnosed by GPs around the country is at a similar level to the previous week, with around 1,400 new cases seen.

Dr Connolly described the level of cases as 'stable'.

No further deaths have been reported since that of an 18-year-old woman at Tallaght Hospital last Friday.

Third Donegal college closes

Another Irish college has had to close temporarily due to an outbreak of human swine flu.

Coláiste Mhachaire Rabahrtaigh in Cloughaneely is the third summer college to shut its doors because of an outbreak of the virus.

Following an increase in the numbers of pupils suspected of having the virus, college authorities decided this evening to send all the students home.

One student tested positive for the virus at the college on Tuesday.

Several students suspected of having the virus were sent home from the college yesterday and Tuesday.

Coláiste Bhride, Rann na Feirste and Coláiste Mhuire Loch an Iúir have closed since the weekend.
