A man has been found guilty at the Central Criminal Court in Galway of the manslaughter of a 20-year-old in the village of Glenamaddy last year.

Patrick Doherty, 45, of Clooncon West, Glenamaddy, had been charged with the murder of Frank Fahy of O'Keeffe Park, Glenamaddy, in the early hours of 15 December 2008.

At the end of a five-day trial, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.

Frank Fahy died after being stabbed in the village square on 15 December.

The court heard how Doherty had an exchange with a man who was with Francis Fahy in a pub earlier on.

At closing time, Doherty drove home and returned with a knife stabbing Francis Fahy in the back.

He also stabbed Gerard Costello, the man who was with him, in the chest and abdomen.

Today in court, a number of women broke down sobbing when the manslaughter verdict was returned.

Doherty was remanded in custody.

He will be sentenced at a sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin in November.
