A public consultation process on the Common Agricultural Policy has been launched to find out what programmes people think will best serve Ireland and the EU in the future.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Food, Brendan Smith has invited interested parties to submit their views on the range of issues regarding the future of the CAP.

The Minister said that funding arrangements for the CAP are fixed until 2013, but currently there is a review underway of all aspects of the EU budget about spending from 2014 to 2020.

Member countries of the EU are also in the early stages of considering the shape and content of the Common Agricultural Policy for the period after 2013.

The Department of Agriculture has prepared an information note outlining some of the options being put forward for European agricultural policy after 2013, and setting out briefly the views that Ireland has expressed to date.
