The HSE has said firms should not panic about swine flu but should be planning for the pandemic to take hold in the workplace.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, the National Director of Communications at the HSE, Paul Connors, said businesses should appoint a 'pandemic tsar' to co-ordinate planning for the pandemic.

A deputy should also be appointed to cover in the event of the 'tsar' being ill.

Mr Connors said studies have shown up to 70% of businesses in the US have not prepared for swine flu and it is possible that this is also the case in Ireland.

Mr Connors said businesses should put in place clear protocols and procedures in relation to hygiene and cleaning issues. Guidelines or etiquette for sneezing etiquette or coughing could be introduced.

He said employers should provide tissues and they should also make sure there are facilities for hand-washing.

Mr Connors said employers should understand staff will have to take time off to care for family members who fall ill.

Asked about the potential rate of absenteeism from swine flu, Mr Connors said the HSE was currently operating on a figure of around 15%.
