The British Foreign Secretary has said the legal guarantees and protocols secured by the Government on the Lisbon Treaty are positive for Ireland and the EU.
David Miliband acknowledged that the Lisbon Treaty had not won popular support in Britain but he defended the country's decision to ratify it through parliament.
The foreign secretary is to travel to Dublin this afternoon to meet Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin and others.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Miliband said that following the recent Irish negotiations, ratification of Lisbon could now proceed.
Yesterday, Germany's Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the Lisbon Treaty is in conformity with the German Constitution, and cleared the act of parliament ratifying the treaty.

However, it ruled that domestic law must be amended to set out the role of the German parliament in the process of making EU laws and amending the treaties.
