An all-out strike by 400 council workers in Co Galway has been called off following three hours of talks between council officials and union representatives.
A back-to-work formula was agreed after two rounds of talks this evening.
17 outdoor council workers were suspended for failing to work with private contractors.
SIPTU declared an official strike this morning and placed pickets on council offices and water and sewage plants across the county.
Tonight, the council agreed to reinstate the workers.
Trade union SIPTU is asking the Labour Court for an early hearing to try to resolve issues surrounding job cuts and reductions in allowances paid to employees.
SIPTU Branch Secretary Michael Kilcoyne said it had also been agreed that a six-person committee be set up to discuss any future arrangements for the use of private construction equipment on road works in the county.
The committee will consist of three members nominated by the council and three by the union.
