The Government is to amend legislation on the jailing of debtors after the High Court ruled in favour of a woman sentenced to prison for not re-paying money owed to her creditors
Caroline McCann from Co Monaghan failed to pay back money that she owed to the Credit Union.
Under the proposed amendments, a court will not jail a debtor unless they are able to pay their bills.
The move has been welcomed by the Small Firms Association, they say that it is important that people realise the implications of not paying their bills.
The Solicitor, who won the case today in the High Court, welcomed the proposed amendments but has urged that the Minister consult interested parties.
