An inmate at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin is in a critical condition in hospital after being found semi-conscious in his cell this morning.
The 26-year-old was attacked in the prison at around 7pm yesterday evening and was treated by medical staff for superficial injuries.
It is still not clear whether that incident led to the deterioration in his condition overnight.
At 9.45pm he complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Mater Hospital.
At midnight he asked to return to prison.
The 26-year-old was found by prison officers this morning.
He was taken to intensive care at the Mater Hospital and has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital.
