A top European Commission official, who is in Dublin today, has urged support for the commission's proposals to crackdown on modern slavery and child sexual abuse.

Director General for Justice, Freedom and Security Jonathan Faull was speaking to the Irish Institute of European Affairs and also met the Immigration Council of Ireland.

The commission's proposals are designed to align European standards across member states and would allow for tougher actions against criminals who often move from country to country and would provide better assistance to victims.

Its proposals are currently before member state justice ministers who would have to agree on them unanimously before they could come into force.
