Management at the Central Mental Hospital say they are being forced into refusing new patients from the 15 June, blaming a staff recruitment ban being put in place by the HSE.

The hospital currently has 15 nursing vacancies.

However, the HSE said tonight that no decision had been taken in relation to bed closures at the hospital.

The Central Mental Hospital is the only facility of its kind in the country treating seriously ill patients who come through the courts and health system.

Due to cutbacks, it says it will have to seriously curtail its service.
