Speaking at a conference in Dublin, Mr Hamilton said that if necessary more must be done to protect the privacy of jury members.

The DPP told the annual National Prosecutors' Conference that he believed the use of covert surveillance was necessary to obtain evidence on organised crime.

However, leading criminal lawyer Sean Gillane told the conference that he had concerns about the current Criminal Justice Surveillance Bill, which was recently introduced in the Dáil.
