The jury in the trial of the 44-year-old man accused of murdering Melissa Mahon is to begin considering its verdict on Monday after hearing closing arguments.

Ronald McManus, also known as Ronnie Dunbar, of Rathbraughan Park in Sligo denies murdering the teenager in September 2006 and also denies threatening to kill his own daughter.

Counsel for the prosecution Isobel Kennedy told the jury it had heard ample evidence to find the accused guilty of the murder of 14-year-old Melissa Mahon.

She said there was evidence that Mr McManus was in a sexual relationship with the schoolgirl and that the evidence from his own daughters was consistent in its core.

While there were other differences between the daughters' evidence, the jury must consider it in the context that they were both young girls who were controlled by their father, Ms Kennedy said.

Counsel for the defence Brendan Grehan disputed the prosecution's claim that there was ample evidence in the case.

He said there was an incredible division in the core evidence as to what actually happened and that the jury had not heard the truth.

The accounts of the daughters were not only radically inconsistent but inherently incredible, he said.

The jury should not fall prey to prejudice about the accused from his appearance or personality, he added.

While the jury may think he was guilty of other crimes with which he had not been charged, such as sexual abuse of Melissa Mahon or helping to dispose of her body, it must try the charge of murder and could not make the leap to assume he was guilty, Mr Grehan said

The jury is expected to begin considering its verdict on Monday.
