Bolivian President Evo Morales has rejected calls for a probe into an alleged assassination plot against him.
Mr Morales told reporters that other countries have no authority to request an investigation.
The Bolivian leader added that international calls coming to the defence of the accused assassins were ill-placed since it was 'these people who came here to make an attempt on the life of the president'.
Michael Dwyer, from Ballinderry, Co Tipperary, was killed in Santa Cruz last Thursday.
He was one of three men killed in a shooting incident with police.
The family of Michael Dwyer have welcomed the proposal for an international panel to investigate his killing.
Speaking to RTÉ News his parents said they hoped such an investigation would clear his name.
They said it was absolutely ridiculous to suggest that he would have been involved in any plot to kill the country's president.
Mr Morales earlier had suggested that an international panel of inquiry should investigate the incident, but has now backed away from that position.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin said yesterday that Ireland sought an international investigation into the shooting of Mr Dwyer.
