Earlier, David Begg from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions said that there is a need to get rid of talk of cutting social welfare and wages, as it is not a way of correcting our economic difficulties.
Turlough O'Sullivan from employers' group IBEC said what is really needed is significant pay cuts across the board because we need to resize the economy.
The main issues that were up for discussion today include the rising unemployment rate, pensions and pay.
The talks are due to resume at 3pm tomorrow.
