Police in Belfast have established a Special Enquiries Team to investigate public order offences in the south of the city on St Patrick's Day.

Almost 20 students were arrested after police came under attack in the Holy Land area of Belfast while responding to calls from concerned residents.

It is understood that students celebrating St Patrick's Day spilled out onto the streets, with a minority throwing cans and bottles at police.

Police say that the team will begin its work next Monday.

It will collate and analyse CCTV footage from the area and liaise with the universities to identify those responsible for the disorder.

They are appealing for anyone with any information regarding the disturbances to contact them.

Five men appeared in court over the disturbances yesterday.

Four are students and one is an electrician.

All five were remanded on bail.

Three others have been charged with public order offences and will appear before Belfast Magistrate's court within the next four weeks.

Eleven others were released pending reports to the Public Prosecutions Office.
