The Madagascan army has transferred power to Andry Rajoelina following the resignation of President Marc Ravalomanana.
The opposition leader took power during a ceremony attended by journalists.
Mr Ravalomanana resigned under army pressure, ending a months-long power struggle on the Indian Ocean island.
A presidential statement also said that a decree had been issued dissolving the government.
'Full powers are given to a military authority headed by eldest in the highest rank of all forces,' the statement said, without specifying who that would be.
