Prices fell by 0.4% compared with January, mainly due to lower mortgage repayments and rents.

February is the second month in a row in which there was negative inflation.

However, last month's fall was not as big as January's as prices recovered after the January sales.

Prices in the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels category, including mortgage repayments and rents, dropped by 4.5% from January.

But clothes and footwear prices rose by 7.5% and prices of furnishings and household equipment moved up 1.7%.
