Taxi drivers protested for the sixth week in a row this morning demanding a restriction on licences.

The report concluded that taxi drivers' earnings have not dropped dramatically.

It did acknowledge that drivers now have to work longer hours, an average of 52 hours a week.

Drivers' representatives said they were shocked at the findings and have vowed to continue their protests.

But the report showed that the demand for new licences is falling off.

In March last year there were 235 new licences issued, last month this was down to 33.

It concluded there was no need for a halt to new licences.

Taxi unions will be meeting with Minister Noel Dempsey tomorrow.
