€600k granted for asthma research

An Irish medical research team has been awarded a grant of €600,000 to help find a cure for asthma.

The team will be led by Dr Conor Burke, consultant respiratory physician at Connelly Hospital Blanchardstown in Dublin.

The award is part of the European Commission-funded Gabriel programme involving over 150 scientists from 14 European countries.

The Irish group will help identify how genes and the environment cause asthma which affects over 470,000 Irish people.

Tissue samples from patients will be stored in a facility at Connolly Hospital to assist with the research.
