Negotiations over severance packages are to take place in the coming weeks.
The redundancies, which are being sought on a voluntary basis, will be negotiated with the trade unions.
The company has said it is committed to continuing manufacturing in Waterford.
The US-owned multinational, which makes eye care products, employs 1,400 at its Waterford base.
Most staff are currently working three weeks out of every four as part of short-time working arrangements.
