Fisheries chief calls for renewal

watch

The Chief Executive of the State fisheries board has said the whole economic model of the country should be renewed with a focus on the creation of jobs from Irish natural resources.

At the National Fishing Industry Exhibition in Galway, CEO of Bord Iascaigh Mhara Jason Whooley said this could be done by developing the seafood sector, which would create guaranteed jobs, particularly in coastal and regional areas.

Fishermen from all around the coast are attending the fishing exhibition, with a lot of discussion on future changes in the way they are represented at national level.

Many are angered at new restrictions on the numbers of days they will be allowed work at sea and expressing the view that last year's protests did not gain them much.
