Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has said he is appalled by the Government's handling of the situation at Anglo Irish Bank and that what is needed now is 'a new mandate for a new Government to take the country in a new direction'.
Mr Kenny said the people had lost confidence in the Government.
Deputy Kenny said the PricewaterhouseCoopers report, published yesterday, vindicated his party's position that Anglo Irish Bank should have been wound up in an orderly manner over a period of five to seven years.
He said Fine Gael will issue a nine point plan to restore confidence in the banking sector which includes replacing management at the banks and the regulatory authority and imposing a cap on pay in the banking sector.
Speaking at the Annual Conference of Young Fine Gael in Athlone, Mr Kenny said there is a vacuum of leadership at the top of Government, and it was time for a fairer and more equitable way to deal with the downturn.
He suggested that Fine Gael was ready to offer what he called the 'tough, but fair and caring, leadership' that is required.
