TDs will next week vote on a Labour Party motion calling for a deferral of the pension levy and the reopening of talks with the social partners.

The motion urges the Government to re-enter negotiations to reach agreement on 'fair and equitable set of proposals'.

The motion will be debated in private members' time on Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

In a statement the Labour Party says the levy is 'unfair in that it places an unacceptable burden on public servants on modest incomes'.

It goes on to say that people should be asked to contribute 'according to their means'.
