A 23-year-old Nigerian woman, who claimed she was forced to work as a prostitute in Castlebar, has been jailed for four months for failing to produce a passport or identity documents.

Gardaí told today's court hearing that despite intensive efforts they still have not been able to establish the identity of the woman.

The woman claims to be Edith Orumwenes and says she is a victim of sex trafficking.

Judge Mary Devins said she was claiming that she was forced to become a sex worker but there was no evidence of that or that she had been trafficked.

The judge said Edith Orumwenes had done little to help herself by not co-operating with gardaí and relying on Ruhama, an organisation that did good work but that could be exploited.

Ruhama's Gerardine Rowley said they were disappointed with the decision.

The group is concerned that women who arrived here as victims of trafficking were not always being treated with a sense of justice and understanding.

She said the organisation would continue to support Edith Orumwenes.
