The group representing the majority of the country's commercial animal feed manufacturers has said the feed at the centre of the recent pork crisis came from a food recycler operating to a much lower level of regulatory control than its members.
Dr Pat Shiels of the Irish Grain and Feed Association also said any report into the scare would fail the consumer if it does not look beyond the operator in question and include all components in the feed and food chain.
He also said he was shocked and disappointed when he learned of the story.
The IGFA were addressing the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee, which is continuing its investigation into the pork scare.
Tomorrow, the Environmental Protection Agency, An Bord Bia, the Irish Farmers Association and IBEC will all appear before the committee.
