The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse has asked the Government to extend the deadline for publishing its final report to the end of May.
The Commission's findings on the abuse of children in Catholic reformatories, industrial schools and other residential institutions had been due by the end of this month.
In a notice published on its website Mr Justice Seán Ryan and his six fellow commissioners say there will be no significant extra cost because of the time extension.
