Poor weather conditions dampened celebrations for the winter solstice at Newgrange, Co Meath.

Hundreds of people gathered in near darkness at the ancient monument hoping to see the sun rise at 8.54am.

When the sun rises, its first rays enter the passage and fill the chamber of the Neolithic passage tomb.

A handful of visitors, chosen through a lottery of 34,000 names, were inside the monument, but they were disappointed when the traditional ray of light failed to enter the chamber.

Today is the shortest day of the year with just seven and a half hours of daylight.

From today, the days grow longer and nights shorter.
