A&E doctor tells of road crash horrors

Seatbelts - Non-use heightens crash injuries
Seatbelts - Non-use heightens crash injuries

An Accident and Emergency consultant has said people need to know the horror and scale of injuries people receive in road crashes.

Gerry Lane is a consultant at Letterkenny General Hospital and is taking part in this year's Road Safety Authority 'Crashed Lives' television campaign.

The campaign features parents of young people killed on Irish roads in recent years.

Every year Dr Lane deals with more than 1,000 patients seriously injured in road crashes in Donegal - that equates to three people every day.

He says injuries are heightened when people do not wear seatbelts, most are thrown through the car's windscreen.

This stark warning will be featured in television ads to air over the coming months.

Today, families of young people killed on the roads gathered at Farmleigh to watch the ads and speak about their experiences.

So far 269 people have died on Irish roads this year, a reduction of 58 from this time last year.
