The bans were imposed last week because of the pork dioxin contamination.

Irish pork exports to South Africa are small, amounting to less than €1m last year.

Tomorrow in Brussels, an EU Management Committee is expected to approve the €180m contingency fund set up by the Government to help pigmeat processors as a result of the product recall.

Irish officials are to ask the Committee to co-fund additional measures which may be needed because of the contamination crisis.

This will be in addition to the €15m which the EU has approved for a cold storage scheme for pigmeat if consumer confidence in the Irish product drops.
