The cut arises from an amendment made to the bill today by Minister for Communications Energy and Natural Resources Eamonn Ryan.

Established in 2003, the Broadcast Fund is a fund to which all broadcasters in Ireland can apply for programme-making finance.

Today's decision will result in a projected loss of €4.4m of direct funding to RTÉ in a full year.

The Broadcasting Bill is expected to be enacted in early 2009.
