220 jobs have been created in Drogheda with the opening of a Tesco Extra store.

It is the second Tesco store in Drogheda.

The new building, at Rathmullan Business Centre, includes environmental features that allow the store to minimise energy consumption.

In Co Kildare, 70 jobs are being created at software development company Sentenial.

Sentenial Ltd in Maynooth announced a significant investment program for the company, as its offices were officially opened by the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Coughlan.

Speaking at the event, the Tánaiste has appealed for consumers to shop local because of what she described as her grave concern for the future of thousands of jobs in the retail sector.

Ms Coughlan said it had been a good week for jobs but that she was appealing for consumers to support the 200,000 people who work in the retail sector by ensuring that every penny that we spend is local and is spent in supporting those jobs.

She said there are still a number of job announcements that she will have at the end of this year and next year, and that the Government is working diligently attracting new investments here.

At the event, Sentenial announced details of a €15m investment plan over the next two years, which includes overseas expansion, a major recruitment drive and R&D investment.

The company, which supplies payment systems for banks across Europe, says it plans to create 70 positions in Maynooth.

Today's job news follows a day of mixed news on the employment front in Co Cork yesterday, when it was announced that the Beamish and Crawford Brewery is to close, with the loss of 120 jobs.

Owner Heineken said high costs had made the 200-year-old plant unsustainable.

Meanwhile, 650 new positions were also announced for Cork at Quinn Insurance, and internet company Open Wireless.
