watch

Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe has rowed back on cuts to supervision cover in second level schools announced as part of the Budget.

Mr O'Keeffe told the Dáil he was providing an additional €2.7m to schools for the remainder of this academic year to cover a limited number of additional hours of supervision cover.

The minister said during that period there would be a full review of supervision cover in second-level schools.

He said the move came as a result of discussions with the Joint Managerial Body which represents second-level school managers.

The minister said he would be open to what he called similar constructive suggestions from Primary school managers.

The minister described his decision as sensible.

He said he did not want to impact on schools into the New Year.
