Banks asked to consider credit initiatives

The Minister for Finance has asked banks to consider credit initiatives for small and medium sized businesses.

Brian Lenihan also wants bank representatives to report back on the matter within ten days.

The minister met with the institutions covered by the Government's Guarantee Scheme yesterday.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Lenihan said the scheme had been successful in safeguarding the stability of the Irish banking sector.
