New measures have been agreed which will make it easier to dismiss teachers who are underperforming in schools.

The procedures, which also include a new system for teacher promotion, were formally agreed on by the Department of Education and school and teacher representatives.

From next September a tiered disciplinary procedure will be introduced for dealing with underperformance.

It begins informally between teacher and principal but if a resolution is not found it moves on to board of management level and then to departmental inspector level.

At the end of this procedure the ultimate decision rests with school's board of management and their sanctions include the deferral of increments, suspension with or without pay and dismissal.
