Figures released to RTE under the Freedom of Information Act show that out of a total of 41,500 who were summoned, over 22,000 were excused from service.

The figures show that 15,844 people were disqualified from jury service because of their job, on health grounds or due to their age.

A further 7,018 were excused at the discretion of the county registrar.

An analysis of figures from one week last June, when 322 were excused, show that 100 people said they could not attend because of work.

99 people said they were primary carers and 84 said they were travelling.

The Department of Justice has said that new measures regarding jury service are on the way.

From early next year, those over the age of 65 will soon be allowed to serve on a jury if they wish and the fines for those who do not show up for jury service without a reasonable excuse will be increased.
