The Rape Crisis Network says it dealt with almost 1,700 people in 2007 at 14 centres around the country.

Its director, Fiona Neary, said rape, child sexual abuse and incest continue to destroy lives in Ireland.

The network says girls are more likely to be abused by a family member, while boys are more likely to be abused by an authority figure.

It says girls are twice as likely as boys to be abused both as children and as adults.

Adult women who report abuse to a rape crisis centre are most likely to be abused by someone known to them, and only 14% report being abused by a stranger.

Women are less likely to report rape to gardaí if the abuse has been carried out by a partner.

The abuse of a child by a family member is the least likely of all sexual abuse to be reported.
