Brian Cowen met Václav Klaus, who is on a three-day state visit to Ireland, at Iveagh House this afternoon.

The Czech Republic takes over the revolving presidency of the EU on 1 January next year.

This morning, Mr Klaus laid a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin before meeting Brian Cowen at the office of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Afterwards, he met Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue at Leinster House, and he will be a guest of President Mary McAleese at a State dinner at Áras an Uachtaráin tonight.

A priority of the Czech EU presidency will be how to move forward after Ireland rejected the Lisbon Treaty earlier this year.

While in Ireland, Mr Klaus will also hold talks with Declan Ganley, the founder of the Libertas Group, who successfully campaigned for the No vote.
