Speaking at Fine Gael's Presidential dinner in Dublin, Mr Kenny said his party was beginning its preparations for a general election and he proposed to undertake a nationwide tour of public meetings in over the next two months.

He said the local and European elections, due to take place in June of next year, were crucial for Fine Gael.

Mr Kenny also said that if the Government's figures were wrong there may well be cause for a supplementary or further Budget in 2009.
