Mr Walshe said the cuts were unacceptable, disproportionate and discriminatory.

He was speaking tonight at a meeting attended by over 1,000 sheep farmers from around the country, which was also addressed by the Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith.

Mr Smith said difficult decisions had to be taken in the Budget and it was unfortunate that they were having an adverse impact on some people.

The Minister said that he was not able to do some things he wanted to do in the Budget and he had to prioritise spending.

The sheep farmers are seeking extra payments to help their troubled sector.
