Bodies representing 21,000 volunteers, who run the country's primary schools, have called on the Government to immediately reconsider the cuts.

They said they want to stress that as volunteers they are doing so purely on behalf of hundreds of thousands of pupils in schools.

The managers said schools were already facing severe financial difficulties prior to the Budget.

They said the delivery of education to all children will be damaged because of the Budget. Changes to substitution regulations will cause chaos in schools and the removal of supports for vulnerable children will only lead to greater costs in the future.

The managers said the cuts are deeply discriminatory. They say in removing supports for ethnic minority children, including traveller children, the cuts have singled out the most vulnerable and least politically vocal.

They have also challenged the Government's assertion that just 200 teaching posts will be lost as a result. Like other groups, they have calculated that 1000 posts will go.
