Hewlett Packard currently employs 4,000 people at its facility in Leixlip in Co Kildare and EDS employs 400 in Treasury buildings in Dublin city centre.

It is not yet clear where the jobs will be lost.

Hewlett Packard recently announced plans to cut 24,000 jobs across its worldwide operations after it acquired EDS, a technology Services Company.

Separately, at least 40 jobs are to be lost with the closure of the Woodstock Hotel in Ennis, Co Clare.

Last week, the High Court appointed a liquidator to the hotel which has been in examinership since June.

A hotel spokesman said a small core of staff would remain in place until Friday and they were trying to accommodate guests who had made a booking.
