The widower of Pakistan's assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been sworn in as the country's president.

Asif Ali Zardari won a resounding victory in a vote of legislators on Saturday.

The poll was called after former president Pervez Musharraf resigned rather than risk being impeached.

Mr Zardari faces severe economic problems and a rampant Islamist insurgency that is threatening Pakistan's stability.

Guests at the inauguration included the Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Repairing relations with neighbouring Afghanistan is just one the challenges facing Pakistan's new president.

Mr Karzai has accused Pakistan of not doing enough to stop militants crossing into Afghanistan to launch attacks.
