Russia plans to station a total of 7,600 servicemen in Georgia's South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions.

Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov announced the plans while briefing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on negotiations with the regions' leaders.

'We have already agreed on the contingent,' he said.

Earlier today, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili gave a qualified welcome to news that Russia had agreed to pull its troops from all of Georgia, except the two separatist regions.

However, he insisted that any long-term solution to the conflict had to respect his country's territorial integrity, which included the disputed territories.

His comments followed talks in Moscow between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Russian counterpart.

Russia has also agreed on the deployment of at least 200 EU observers in Georgia by 1 October to monitor a ceasefire, ahead of talks on the conflict in Geneva later that month.

Meanwhile, President Saakashvili said he took exception to the increased use by diplomats of the term Georgia ‘proper'.
